Patrick was born in Southern Rhodesia. His father was a chemist, physicist and engineer and happened to be a tobacco farmer when Patrick came along. His mother began as a dancer and factory worker in Sheffield and ended as a businesswoman, trading illegally with eastern block countries in defiance of UN sanctions. He grew up in the turbulent politics and social life of Rhodesia under the Smith regime, for the most part, finding himself at odds with the society around him. He married, graduated from the University of Rhodesia and left for the UK all in the same year. Patrick tried teaching, Eurobond trading and working in a commercial laundry but ended up in an obscure branch of the computing industry. He now works for Microsoft and lives in Seattle with his wife and the two out of four children who are still at home.
