Beyond her capabilities as a playwright, director and teacher, she is known as the founder and host of the Beach Poets. She founded the poetry reading in 1990 at North Avenue Beach, then moved it to Loyola Park in 2000. ??Beach Poetry? has been featured over the years on Wild Chicago and in both the Chicago Tribune and Sun-Times. She has been featured on the cover page of the Tempo section of the Chicago Tribune, in Colorado??s ??The Aspen Times?, ??The Boulder Daily Camera??? on radio with WBEZ??s ??Metropolis?, and on TV with WTTW??s ??Wild Chicago? among others, Cathleen has been published in numerous anthologies including: ??Step Into The Light?, ??Stray Bullets?, ??Leapings?, ??The Poetic Soul?, and ??Tomorrow Magazine?. She has performed one-woman shows at Café Voltaire and Mary Arrchie among other theaters. Poet, actress, playwright, producer, puppeteer and mother, Cathleen has written numerous plays for children which concern contemporary themes such as child abuse. These plays have been performed at Organic Theater and the Chicago Cultural Center.

Among her many awards, Cathleen has won a Certificate of Leadership in Racial Justice from the YMCA, ??Outstanding Leader in Peace? from the Peace Museum, and was named as one of the ??100 Women Making a Difference? by Today??s Chicago Woman. She emceed the lierary trivia quiz at the Printers?? Row Book Fair in 2002; and was also featured at the Chicago Public Library during National Poetry Month, 2002 in ??Partners in Rhyme: Poets in the Branches?. Cathleen is an active member of the Irish American Heritage Center with whom she was awarded Chicago Instructional Technology Foundation??s ??Best Narrative Film? for ??Potatoes Gone Bad? a docu-drama about the Potato Famine that she produced with the Irish Arts Club. She and her husband, the talented musician Peter C. Bartels, can be found in the current Illinois Arts Council??s ??Artist in Education? Roster.

During her Artist??s residency in Savanna, Illinois, Schandelmeier taught the process of film-making from idea to storyboarding and production, to fourth graders and together they produced ??The Altruistic Alien? about an alien who comes down to heal the earth??s ozone. ??The Altruistic Alien? was included in the Chicago International Film Festival in 2001. She produced ??Potatoes Gone Bad? along with the young teens of the Irish American Heritage Center and won Best Narrative from the Chicago Instructional Technology Foundation??s Film Festival in 2002.
