Secondary Discipline: Beading Seminares/History of the
Culture for New Orleans Mardi GrasIndian
New Orleans, La.
Mardi Gras Indian has change a lot. But I keep to
tradition, to the rules of Mardi Gras Indian, pure and
with respect art form. Mardi Gras Indian has been my
passion sence I first seen and heard it played as a little
child. When you see and hear Mardi Gras Indians you either
love with it or not. But if you do, it can be intoxcating
making you want more and more.
Artist Statement
Mardi Gras Indian beaded art has several different facets
which are three demencal abstract and flat portate. Mardi
Gras Indian Music has different rhythm paternerns played
that is signal by gestures of eyes, hands and feet
coordination it requries some time to understand the
feeling of this particular art form. Once there is an
understanding of those feelings, the performer gives
inteurpetation of the piece.
Biography
Cyril was born in New Orleans August 1966 in the
downtown area called the Sevent Ward. He began his study
sewing and chanting Mardi Gras Indian rhythems as a family
tradition, learning from both sides of his family uncle's
as they were Mardi Gras Indian since the early 1960's As
Cyril grew older he became more attracted to Mardi Gras
Indian and began an extensive work eitc and planned budget
to construct Mardi Gras Customs. Since then Cyril also
known to the Mardi Gras Indian communty as "Chief Iron
Horse" for over 10 years engaging audiences with
performances "brilliant, passionate, and favorate regular
at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and for over
10 years was the first Mardi Gras Indian to full dress and
compete at every level with all the other chief in the city
and win top awards and name reconition throughout the Mardi
Gras Indian community. Cyril also gave perfromances at St.
Mark's Community Center, Orleans and Jefferson Parish
Schools, Privet Pre-K & Nursery Schools, Mardi Gras Indian
Hall Of Fame at Oreata Castle Healey Elementary School,
Children Summer Camp Programs, Beading Demostration
Semnaires, Lectures, Performaces at tourist information
centers Jean Lafeat National Park, Master P Music Video and
The Big Easy movie on the USA network, & PBS documantary
specials on channel 12 and countless Jazz Funerals Erine
Kay Doe and The late Tuba Fats as well as Big digutaries
and politation other public officals, family members in the
indian community, second liners, and all Mardi Gras Indians
who died.
