As a teenager in the 1980s, Denise Hofmann was exploring her youthful sexuality with a feminist viewpoint. She experimented with alcoholic concoctions, kept a journal of her rebellious adventures, and wrote poetry. As a malcontent Gen Xer, she tested the societal boundaries of suburban Atlanta and tried to psychoanalyze all of the people with all of the people with which she interacted. Denise and her best friends, a group of teenage boys a year ahead of her in high school, tried to alleviate the boredom and numbness of their lives by exploring a supposed Satanic church, driving around looking for random gatherings of people, experimenting with relationships and drugs, and sneaking alcohol into school in a hairspray bottle.
