I started writing prose poems in college. It was fairly easy to do and I was fairly serious about it. I honestly thought that that was all I was capable of.
In the years since, I've jotted many story ideas down, but the idea of actually writing a novel, or even a short story was daunting. I had no patience, no attention span for that sort of thing.
Everything changed last year when I completed my first NaNoWriMo. I had never even heard of it until 3 days before it started. I was curious to see if I actually could write 50,000 words. I wrote more. I actually wrote a novel.
I don't think I can accurately relate how that made me feel. Elated? Ecstatic? Yes, and so much more. It was a revelation, and my life hasn't been the same since. I have awakened a monster that constantly needs to be fed. I write to live, and live to write. I wouldn't have it any other way.
