My first published article was on the front page of the Fort Collins Coloradoan, my home town paper.
I was 17, and wrote about the gravel pits east of town. There my dog Kiche and I trespassed and enjoyed the quiet, mystical beauty of the ponds, old trees and a view of the Rocky Mountain front range.
My article suggested the private property, once owned by the mining company, and now leased to sheep farmers, be made public with walking trails. And the nesting geese should be protected from vandalous teenagers and unaware farmers.
Well, I left Colorado after high school in '71, and was not back to live until this past spring, 34 years later. Today a walking and bicycle trail winds around and through "my ponds." And the geese are protected.
This writing experience taught me that one person CAN make a difference.
Now my passion is being caretaker, with my wife, of the Eternal Quality Awards. These are monthly contests, a circle and zine all focused on timeless values. The Awards officially launch on February 1, and the address is http://www.eternalquality.net in case you'd like to stop by for a visit.
Best to all in your endeavors,
Gary
