Writing is many things for me – a hobby, a career, a frustration, a therapy. I’ve had a love affair with the written word, with many the tear-stricken fight and reunion, for as a long as I can remember. As a child, reading about other universes gave me the sense of adventure I often lacked growing up in a strict household, and fictional characters became the friends I didn't always have. As a teenager, reading about other points of view opened my mind to a world beyond the narrow culture of my small hometown. Today, as an adult, words still fascinate and engage me the way nothing else can – not just reading others’, but writing my own, dissecting and appreciating both.
I feel that true self-expression has a tendency to be undervalued in today’s culture - we subsist on fast food, the constant half-entertainment of television and iPods and MySpace, and the ever-advancing communications technology that can actually become a hindrance to true sharing. Appreciation for the written word seems to have fallen, and it’s one of my goals to not only to express myself and share a story, but to encourage – no, elicit – the revival of that appreciation.
