Land of My Friends

Far beyond the grasp of reality
Darkness comes upon me once again.
These walls, spotted with my blood,
Hidden from the sun,
Are my dearest and oldest friends.
They will never betray me
Like so many others have.

Running through these airless halls,
I scream at the top of my lungs.
Knowing no one is able to hear me
I am free to do as I wish.
In my most evil voice I say
'Come out my dark friends.
Encompass my soul once again.'

Slowly quietly the demons come to me,
Their eyes a dry blood red.
They close in on me
Like savage beasts on a prey.
For a moment I'm afraid,
Not sure what they are about to do,
But then I remember the night before.

For hours after the encounter
They continue to hiss,
Their voices mesmerizing me.
Talk of murder, suicide, threats,
And sin rush into my open ears.

When they leave at last
I run to get my sharpest knife,
Still stained with blood from the night before.
Not even I know what I'm going to do with it
But no one can stop me.

try smiling once and a while. It is the darnkess that holds you back as a poet. I have friends who write and live their lives like this, a beautifully, twisted existence, but they never really get to enjoy the beauty of the world because their so caught up in this emotional, internal conflict. Maybe I don't understand it, and maybe that's a good thing.

"There and Back Again"

by brigitte liebenberg

A powerful, poetic journey back from the brink - literally! The poetry in this book is a direct result of the creative processes started by entering therapy for depression. The poetry speaks for itself and allows others to relate to the content in their own ways.
