My heart, cold as stone,
Is encased by blades of steel.
No one shall enter nor escape.
My heart is my treasure,
A reminder of how much I have to lose.
Anyone who tries to touch my heart
Shall perish and be forgotten.
You might say that I cannot protect it forever
But I shall prove you wrong.
Some people ask, 'Why not let people in?'ť
And my response is, 'Because they could rip it to shreds.'ť

If I let these walls crumble, all hope shall deteriorate as well,
The essence of my life smashed as if made of glass.
I trust only these protections, established by my will.
They shall never fail me, betray me, or hurt me.
I believe that those who do not guard themselves are fools.
They are easy pickings for those that set out to do harm.
Only foolishness on one's part can lead to one's demise.
You may call me stubborn, cold, and selfish.
I do not mind, your words do not disturb me.
Say whatever you wish about me, these walls will stay up.

I'm not going to rant at you about this one. I understand the feelings of the speaker in the poem. Once you've had your heart broken once (and mine has been cracked but not totally broken) you want to keep it from happening again. I happen to know that you are not the kind of person to do that. You're a shameless flirt. :-) So I'll just say that I like this poem. Good job.

"Son of My Soul -- The Adoption of Christopher"

by Debra Shiveley Welch

Son of My Soul – The Adoption of Christopher is the story of a woman’s journey through loneliness, poverty, neglect, and her triumph over a turbulent past. Thinking of her childhood as “boot camp,” and applies the lessons she learned as an example of how not to mother her child.
