This summer my call up papers arrive
My friends now seem like no one else on earth
We dodge the draft
Concoct ill feeling, are overcome
Needing, yearning to be shipped away
A last gasp at the institutional
Don't worry ma
I'll be home for the millennium
One chance
Give the winter meaning
New colleagues, one dirty joke each, rationed
Rail against my superiors
Together in temporary conditions
Foetus-like at night, lost in my own poetry of horror
A year at war is always enough
To make a man of you
Yeah ma, when this boy returns
He'll be on another plane
Thrown amongst each other like we were in school
Girls back home touched by frozen sessions
Please let me get drafted this summer sir
Show 'em all
I don't need to pull into the play station
No footballing cup or future to map out
Away from pubs with agendas behind the overt
Let me see the horror people
Then I can feel ready to decide
Living for the idea of her
That strange new intensity
Brought here by the promise of a finale
Absorb it
Relish the fading of the light
Watch his back, another watches mine
I couldn't now if I tried
Yeah kid, I'd like to be drafted
I wait each morning underneath the letterbox
Man needs war
And phallic imagery might disturb you babe
Your tomorrow, oh so sure
My girl can't see the call up as I will
To accelerate my dreams
I fight for nothing
