I Never Thought Hymens Were Funny Until....
Today in my 11 a.m. Anatomy class I gave the students a mnemonic device to help them remember the order of the 12 cranial nerves of the brain. (A mnemonic is a saying where each word begins with the same letter as the list of words you are trying to remember). So, the best mnemonic I know for the cranial nerves is:
Oh (Olfactory Nerve-- I)
Oh (Optic Nerve--II )
Oh (Oculomotor Nerve--III)
To (Trochlear Nerve--IV)
Touch (Trigeminal Nerve--V)
And (You get the idea!!)
Feel
Virgin
Girls'
Vaginas
And
Hymens
As usual, this tends to wake up the class and cause some giggling. However, two older women in the front started whispering and then stared at me with blank looks on their faces.
The younger of the two, who I guess to be in her 30's, then piped up, "What's a hymen?"
I thought she was kidding, so I said, "Are you serious?"
She said, "Yeah. What is it?"
I said, "It's the membrane that covers the vagina before sex." Still the blank look.
I said, "You know, the thing that breaks and bleeds when you lose your virginity."
"OoHHHHHH," she said. She finally understood.

This is so much better than the dry copy of Gray's Anatomy I was given and told to memorize. Where were you when I had to learn all this stuff??? lol Of course, I went to a Catholic uni so I doubt this would have been included. Great stuff! T.

If you like mnemonic devices - then you might like my writing style - albeit - it's a bit on the "puzzling" side. I think those memory aids are the best by the way. Lord knows - they've helped me through a few clases on my own. And, when they have a "dirty" word in it - it is always a sure sign I'll remember - great job!!!

NIce little anecdotal passage, although I have to admit that I was waiting for something conclusive, a literary punchline or something. If I'm not getting the full story, please direct me to the spot where I can get the fuller picture. From what I read, the recounting seems to re-inforce my theory that people are so often out of touch with things that are so close to them. Nice little aside here, and a quick, easy read. Thanks, Wes-
