Hymn of the Adolescent

To him/her that is lost and confounded,
Caught up in a world they cannot control;
Remember, my friend, to always stay grounded,
In the things you've discovered in the depths of your soul.

Remember the days when you knew no regrets,
nor embarrasement, nor harrasment,
no ownership, no debts.

Find in the world a place you can dwell,
and find in the Lord a purpose to sell.
So that you and your kin may stay far from hell.

Choice is illusion, decide that right now.
Foster a protege, and in them endow,
the wisdom and courage you've discovered thus far,
by following someone greater than you are.

Love your parents, forgive them their sins,
never find yourself in the mess that they're in.

Love your God, and in everything fear Him,
learn what this means and you'll always near Him.

A very resonating and true poem. I LOVE the first stanza, it's beautiful. Of course, that means the rest had a high standard to live up to--which most of them did. The only paragraph I had real trouble with was the last. You can't rhyme "Him" with "Him" and I'm sure if you're religious, that's an important point, but it doesn't seem to fit with the rest of the poem. You kind of start off with this ballad of the adolescent and taper off into a list of do's and don'ts, slightly less powerful. Overall, a really good poem. Nice job.

This is really great. Some great lines in this
"endow the wisdom and courage you've discovered thus far,
by following someone greater than you are.'
It's wise and eloquent and I enjoyed very much
