An open letter to Ismail Haniya, the Palestinian Prime minister
Dear Sir,
I'm writing you this letter with the full understanding that in all probability, you, or anyone of importance on the Palestinian side would never get to read this, but you know what, at least I know that I've tried to reach out in my own small way, and to me it is important, and good enough reason to continue writing this letter, no matter who ends up reading it.
And maybe God willing, you might somehow read this letter or a similar one, written by another concerned person like me, of which I'm sure there are many all around the world, people who look up to the leaders of the world, to make this a better place.
What I have to say here might surprise you in some ways, and may also be what you would expect to hear, coming from an Israeli Jew in some other ways.
First, let me start by saying that I, and many other Israelis and Jews all around the world feel your pain, and see the immense anguish your people go through every single day.
Now, before I cause some Israelis who might be reading this, to stop reading right here, and portray me in their minds, as just another leftist Looney, who wants to destroy the State of Israel, and give it all back to the Palestinian people, I would like to clarify what I meant when I said I feel your pain, and what should be done by you and others like you in a position to bring change, so that the pain and suffering can be stopped, to be replaced by hope and prosperity to both people.
You see Sir, the Jewish people as I'm sure you already know, have also gone through some very difficult times in the last few thousands years, difficulties that I'm not going to elaborate on right now, because it is not the point of this letter.
Nor am I here to compare your level of sufferings now, to ours in the past. Any unnecessary suffering that can be stopped should be stopped, and the sooner the better.
But what I do want you, and your people to know, is that because of what the Jewish people have gone through, most of us, have tremendous empathy to anyone around the world who suffers, and that includes your people as well.
And yes, it's very clear to all those who care to see, that the people whom you Sir, now represent, are still suffering tremendously every single day.
At this point, I could go back into history, and start arguing, (I say arguing, since I'm sure that we would agree on very little as far as who is to be blamed for your people's predicament as it stands now.)
But I think that both you and I know that this argument would be a total waste of time.
Instead, why don't we, meaning you the Palestinian, and us the Jews in Israel, reexamine our options and see what makes sense, and how we can both help our respective people to get out of this vicious cycle of madness.
In my mind, you, as the new Prime Minister of the Palestinians, have only two clear options.
The first, and the one you've stuck to thus far, is to do very little for your people, besides declaring day in and day out, that armed resistance is the only way to achieve your goals, and that you would never recognize the State of Israel.
Oh, yeah, you did promise a long cease fire if we would agree to your terms, that unfortunately, to most Israelis, would be akin to a national suicide, but you've offered nothing else of any substance neither to us, nor to your people.
In my humble opinion, if you continue to stick to this rigid line, you would accomplish absolutely nothing positive, and only ensure the continued misery to your people and mine.
But, there is a second option, one that would bring peace and prosperity to your people and ours.
That option is the reality option, one, which is very hard to sallow, both to your people and mine, but guess what, they would have to.
In a way, it's a bit like going to a doctor and hearing some bad news about your health.
But yet, the doctor also tells you that there is a treatment that might save your life.
Now granted, the treatment would be difficult, and sometimes very painful, but it would also give you a chance to heal.
And this is what you need to do Sir, go to the doctor, and hear the news.
And then, sit down with all your advisers, and come to a decision to go ahead with the treatment.
Now granted, if you change your ways, and recognize Israel, there would be those among your people who would call you a traitor, but trust me, most of your people, deep in their hearts, would bless you, and thank you for saving them from this hell on earth they're facing every single day of their lives.
Yes Sir, you could be the one, who could finally stop this madness and bring peace to this troubled region of the world.
And for generations to come, your people would always remember you as a great hero, the one who had the big enough heart, sense, and courage, to see their suffering and actually do something about it.
And believe me, I know that what I'm asking you to do is probably the hardest thing you would ever do in your life. But yet, the rewards to your people would be so great, that it is worth the pain associated with the sacrifice of a compromise that you and your people would have to make.
And if you would to the take this radical step, you would force the Israelis to make similar painful concessions of their own.
So please, from one people who suffer to another.
Enough of the bloodshed, enough with the uncompromising slogans, lets instead sit down together over some good Turkish coffee, and each of us will then start making those painful, but brave decisions that would lead both of our people to have a better life, one full of happiness and hope for a better future for us, and for generations to follow.
Shukran (Thank You)
