A Roundelay

In ancient Crete he sat with his muse
dreaming of the future,
certain in the strength of a civilisation
held together by a power he believed he could nurture
by will and pacific thought.
He deigned to teach them how to speak
and seemed to speak of love
in words so few would understand
(though all could hear)
but in a way to which contempt adhered,
which became a monster in his labyrinth.
He died when Santorini exploded!

I was O.K. until I read the last line. It seemed as though it wasn't part of the rest and cut me off short.
