Hearts

Hearts

I found the candy hearts that I gave you for Valentine's Day
Scattered across the living room floor.
For what may be a lifetime,
My heart joined that discarded candy,
Lying lifeless in the spilled cigarette ashes and trash.
Through blurry eyes, I could not distinguish between them.
I collected the hearts and realized something for the first time.
Each heart told a piece of our lives.

Cute

I'll never forget the first time I saw you.
Bouncing and giggling with your friends, so full of life.
Your body so firm, your smile so bright' perfection.
That moment forever etched into my memory.

Guess Who

I did anything to get your attention.
Walking by in hopes you would look my way.
Making noises and praying for a glimpse from you.
I knew no embarrassment for gaining your eye.

Call Me

You gave me your number and a new lease on life.
I wanted to run to the phone and call, even though you were right there.
Your voice more beautiful than a siren's song.
Each word a new breath, each conversation a new day.

R U Shy

You laughed when I couldn't be direct.
I would never say what was really on my mind.
'My floor needs vacuumed', I would say.
What I was really thinking was how much I wanted to make love to you.

Kiss Me

It was our third date when I first kissed you.
Never was there a kiss in history that rivaled that kiss.
The world stopped in that instant.
I had waited so long, rewarded so well.

1 & Only

You were my only reason for being.
My chest swelled with pride with you by my side.
All eyes upon you, approving smiles tossed my way.
I felt invincible, so envied by the rest.

No Way

There is no way to ever forget you.
No way to ever stop loving you.
No way to live without you.
Just' no way.

I realized too late what I had given you.
Only a heart and only a box of candy.
You wanted the pieces of each.
The words, the thoughts, the emotions.
I cried as I held those discarded hearts to my own.
I wished that you were there so I could hold you.
Kiss you like that first kiss, stop the world again.
I know now that I have lost the way, but I will never lose this feeling.

A really creative example of how seemingly trivial items can spark off the most intense emotional memories.

This is amazing, I just recently went through a break up so I can completely relate to your words. I think you have described the emotional ruins of a relationship for all of us that have been through it.

From the first line you are pulled in on this one. The use of hearts was a brilliant way to say how you felt for your love and the loss of love. This is a very vunerable piece and takes the reader right along with you on you journey of feelings. You have a very great talent of writing. You know just what strings to pull to make the readers feel the poem, not just read it.
