The Day Trouble Left
It sat upon the many people,
It showed them how to cry.
It did its best to cause unrest,
Do you not know, for he knows why?
For if I had never lived, he says,
Would one know how to smile?
Would one know how to bow?
And stand up all the while.
If I had never caused,
A man to weep,
Would he know
That as he sows, so shall he reap?
Or if I did not cause a farmer,
To weep in despair,
With the crop that did not rise,
Would he ever love his share?
If a lover did not find,
His love, would he not weep,
But then would he know,
Of the love that he could keep?
Or if over a broken toy,
Had the child not been heartbroken,
Would he ever show respect,
To life and its token?
Or if the hunter,
Never missed his aim,
Would he not think that he was
Bigger than the game?
So says he, trouble,
And then lies silent,
A sad day will come, he would say,
When all trouble, to a distant land went.
