exactly where she is.

she watches the trains go by from her bedroom window,
and listens to the heartbeat of the engine disappear into the night.
rain drops dance down the window pane
to music that no one can hear.
wrapping a blanket around the small frame of her body, she dreams
of some other place not known even to herself.

some place beautiful;
with the sun warming her skin with tender kisses,
the smell of fresh flowers
and fruit filling her lungs, bringing back memories
of a carefree life; rich with laughter and love.

lightning strikes!
bringing her back to Earth; dismal, grey and dark.
no sight of Moonlight's eye tonight;
Winter's cloak triumphs yet again.
she frowns at this, not liking the idea of being told
by a non-existent life form what to do.

she turns her back to the darkness outside.
saddened by the cold grin of the Night,
she tightens the grip of the blanket around her.
yet, even though she stands with her surroundings,
she is warmed to the heart by what she sees.

sleeping peacefully, and dreaming sweet dreams
is the one she searched for all her life.
the one she will love all her life.
the one she will protect with her life.
and no matter how dismal the world outside will get,
she is happy.

exactly where she is.

this reminds me of the way i feel when i'm not traveling or making plans to, and i hear a freight train roll by. i don't presume you know quite what that feels like but this poem captures it quite well. your choice of words paints a vivid picture.
