The Tonight Show (a rerun)

Kleenex brand 3-ply tissues
Work best to dam the
Snot that dribbles upon
My upper lip, and the
Tears that flow from
These blood-shot, onyx eyes,
As Jay Leno aims fruitlessly
To be witty, once again
But,
Bombay brand Sapphire gin
Works best to drown out the
Mourning filled nights,
Which creep, persistently
Through cracked windows
Of television-lit bedroom
Above the yaps from
Norm, the shih tzu next door
And I realize, that someday,
Due to my over consumption,
I'll have a bulbous, olive beast of a belly
Perched above a hungry penis
That I will no longer
Be able to view
Without the use of a mirror
And that's fine by me,
Because right now
My nose is red, raw and sore
From blowing too hard
And I'm damn tired of
All this emotional shit
While the belly'¦
Well, the belly remains as is,
Still modest and sort of flat,
Certainly eager for more libations
Maybe with a lime squeeze
Or a drop of lemon juice'¦
Yup,
Got plenty of gin
Chilling in the freezer,
But the tissue box is
Almost spent, close to empty
As I lay here again, angry and
Loaded at 11:39 p.m.
On a weekday night

My favourite line was 'Mourning filled nights', i appreciated the wordplay here. Being English, i've caught the Jay Leno show only a couple of times by accident, and i did wonder why people thought it was funny - cause i didn't think it was witty at all.

This had smile-making elements though - and i don't know what it is about the word 'penis' in a poem. It's just one of those funny words.

Enjoyed this a lot, imagery was great and the lines were well constructed. Suggestions follow:

'Works best to drown out the' - perhaps lose the word 'out', flows better

'Through cracked windows
Of television-lit bedroom' - maybe pluralise bedroom OR put 'a' between 'of' and 'television'

'Shihtzu' is one word i think

'Maybe with a lime squeeze
Or a drop of lemon juice' - could be 'maybe with squeezed lime or a drop of lemon juice' - flows better?

Hyphenations needed are:- Bombay-brand, mourning-filled, lime-squeeze (maybe) (could be lime-squirt? lime-something? i don't like lime-squeeze.)

There we go anyway. Hope the critique helps...

The imagery in this piece is excellent and causes the reader to look forward themselves with the vices they are indulging in. The humor you've included makes the piece all the more relateable.

Very relatable sad but true piece of work. I like how you mixed in a little dark humor into this poem. Look forward to reading more.

Absolutely love this, it's a different subject matter to most of your other work but still shows immense talent you have.
