THE DRAGON

Their life together was meant to be a pleasant fable, yet The Prince continued to visit secret forests hidden in the moonlite, time after time ignoring his midnight curfew.

Even still, the Princess, bore him two children, heirs to the sizeable fortune earned by the King who lived on the Silver Ridge of the mountain side. That is, if The Prince takes council and matured enough to save his of-springs a couple of pennies before spending the entire fortune on fun in the sun and night time adventures where bright lights and loud music compete with fine Whiskey and beautiful fairies. The young boys knew nothing of these indiscretions, they just loved their Daddy.

In fairy tales there are no divorces, but this was long no love story any more, so it happened and the separation was legally documented. We all want to be free, but as soon as we are, it's the worst thing to be. Often she wondered, if she was less proud, less stubborn then ' if she had asked him nicely not to do those things, to refuse the glamour and the glitter of the underground world, to please stop going to places where strange creatures, not so perfect, dwelled the earth, where wickedness burns as fire. If she had warned him of the gloom and the anguish awaiting him, had she convinced him to rather refuse the evil and choose the good that the bright dark truth is on the attack. They are little devils in pretty disguises; would things have turned out different?

Time can be cruel, words between them became very few, every moment waiting and watching, crashed her dreams, and destroyed her hope of them ever coming true. Lost in forever her life became empty with promises and lies, sweet talk and deceiving love words, his tears of regret had lost its meaning. His action speaks loud, made her doubt that he ever really cared. All seemed useless.

Silently she asked forgiveness for leaving. There was nothing to stay for. Her freedom meant more than meaningless words. At last the charming prince could exercise his social skills on the young and restless ' which he did, to his hearts content. During all those times, while satisfying a no-name need, did he realize that perhaps the person, whom he was hurting most, was the one who loved him most? There was really nothing out there ' just her, waiting for him in an empty castle built on promises and lies.

In time it just didn't matter anymore. There are the words to a modern day song: 'The things they had together, belonged to the past, it all faded so fast.' She was gone, lost to him forever, never to be his again, to touch him, to hold him, to love him like she once did. If he wanted her to love him only, he should have loved only her.

Remembering the belligerent and controlling Queens words, condemning and sharp as a knife: 'My dear girl' she said, both tender and icy, 'who do you think would take you in, a twice married woman with three small children?' A single sentence roll of her tongue like snake poison. At first the princess had a feeling of un-importance; she was desperately unhappy, could no one then see her pain in their sublime state of being? Walking on a miserable lonely street, no defense, a pang of anger capsized in fearful pride. She swallowed her tears and smiled at the Dragon. With a determined spirit, quietly and finally she decided she was going to find herself a knight in shining armor.

Zuanne-Marie, this story has both the flavor of a more traditional tale and a modern one. The main character is very heavy of heart, but seems to be reaching for a new hope at the end. You also have some good descriptive lines such as "They are little devils in pretty disguises". --Robert Barlow
