Nights in Black Satin
A desperate impulse sparks inside the folds
of satin sheets that never crease for long.
I tried to change the slimy quilt that sold
my soul to worthless nights where lust belongs
But night time falls.
Consumed with need that aches
and conquers pride, I ride into the night
to seek my prince to banish the mistakes
I made with dukes on dark and silky nights.
But rumpled clothes of love are cleaned and hung
on hangers ready to be worn again,
and tearful eyes from mornings after wrung out
and dried with powder-painted skill by ten.
I wish I could have bought a cotton sheet,
but silk remains a sheer, addictive treat.

I find this a beautiful commentary of longing. I was confused by the move from satin at the beginning to silk at the end. Was satin meant to be the "slimy" counterpart of what she really coveted, that being silk? Sometimes I am a bit thick; please bear with me.

The second stanza floored me. What excellent word choices to express something so powerful! The part about finding a prince to banish memories of dukes was especially poignant. Wonderful poem! Thank you for this. :)

i've felt like this so many times... but couldn't put it quite as elegantly as you have here. Really impressive.

"I tried to change the slimy quilt that sold / my soul to worthless nights where lust belongs" - great word choices make these lines work so well. 4th stanza also especially blinding.

This may be farfetched, but I like how this makes a kind of social statement - how it's hard for a woman to maintain a reputation and have experience with men, and how she beats herself up for never finding the right guy, not even taking into account the opinions of others.
Yeah sorry, went on a little rant there. But I really like this. |
