Family

They say you cannot choose your family
I say they are wrong
A family is much more than flesh and blood
It's compassion, and understanding.
It's believing, and inspiring.
It's honesty, and support.
The family of the 21st century has been said to consist of friends
A blood family that are friends is a rare thing to find.
The people you choose to share your life with
Are the people that make your family.
They are friends and lovers and colleagues.
They are the casual acquaintances you nod hello to in the morning
Who you'd miss if they weren't there.
A family is the thing that makes you feel whole
Whoever you choose them to be.

Nothing more I can say about the sentiment of this piece than has already been said. As far as the poem itself, I would be inclined to remove the second line as the last two lines are so powerful that it would have more impact if the reader reaches the same conclusion without the initial challenge to the status quo.

I agree with you. A perfectly heartwarming poem, Neil. Thanks for sending me here to have a read.

It's funny how your readers have compared the poem to their family on SI.

Wonderful, Neil. You are very right about this, and I feel this way over serveral friends whom I would call my little family. Here, in my swamp infested wilderness home, and on SI. This is a wonderful poem that everybody needs to read. Thanks babe. :)

I needed to read this today. I have made such great friends, acquaintances, talented bunch of loving supportive friends on this site. I am only too happy to be a part of this wonderful family who support and imbibe inspiration. Unconditional and giving in more ways I express my gratitude for poetries that uplift the spirit. This one I really needed to read today. Thanks for this precious gift and for being a brother, a sister, a friend, my family. I am truly touched by this. Thanks Neil! Wonderful way to encapsulate what being a family means. We are just writing poetries but in our words, we feel connected sometimes more so than our own blood brothers and sisters.I am only too happy to read and be inspired by the words of many talented writers such as yourself! Excellent message!
Happy to be part of your chosen family.
