procrastination

I lie on the couch
as the Beatles play softly
from my laptop
on the kitchen counter

The night has slowly crept
into bright skies
my body aches
and birds chirp hatefully
outside

I should be working
my code sits unfinished
on the same laptop
now lulling me to sleep

I have been awake all night
pretending to work
but actually working
on finding other things to do

For me it's always the same
the closer a deadline looms
the more interesting
the rest of the world becomes

Every stray insect
a passing parade
to draw my fancy
even the most trivial of tasks
now seems terribly important

This distracted state of mind
brings with it a sense of power
I could write a novel
I could change the world

Anything but finish that damn code
