Today's Discontent or Ode to Edward Thomas

The sun shines through my window
As I waste hours on keyboard flutters,
Phone calls and smiles at colleagues.
The wish to be dis-aquainted from my boss
Grows stronger as if I am a tree
Wrenching its roots from under tarmac,
Or a fledgling struggling to fly the nest.

But tied am I to mediocrity and routine
Signed up for yet more dross in flotsam time.
I pay my dues as the farmer carries the corn
Across his ploughed field to thresh.
This cusp of season has shaken my resolve;
Autumn creeps on in windy afternoons
While Summer flounders in last week's memory.

--cringes-- I'm not even working yet, I'm still in high school ! After reading this, feel a little discouraged about working !
But, even so, this was written beautifully, and it had a lot of soul. Gorgeous piece.

Very well written, and it says what we all feel, stuck in some soulless office all day! :)

Ouch!! Do we share the same job, or work in the same place??

I love the metaphors here, especially the tree wrenching its roots.

this just makes me even more determined to win the lottery.

At some point...

This reminds me of something that was written long ago. I love the words you use, especially the last line. Nice work.

Frances - I feel your pain! Just what I needed to read before starting another day at work! : (

"Autumn creeps on in windy afternoons
While Summer flounders in last week's memory"

Those are really beautiful lines! There seems to be a contrast between the two stanzas, as if the first were modern and the second more traditional in feel. Very inspiring! - Gavin
