For my Nana and Grandma

the whispers of Portugese guitarists
will float timelessly through the ether
of our family's history

lost to the earth
flickering fragments of energy
soar past my naive attempt to capture them

our people
we have receptive hands
hearty laughs
and a million ways to sooth
the hungry heart

after a few brief comments
they incinerated the hopelessly malfunctioning
organic recording device
Her message traveling past the stars
and beyond my bleary-eyed grasp
