Treading Water

Finding your place in society
In this post-modern waste land
Is like cycling up a steep hill
With one lung and a
Time-bomb strapped to your back

Over-qualified
Disillusioned and alienated
Our grasp of youth slips away
Whilst our dreams dissipate
Our stores of compassion
And reservoirs of empathy
Begin to empty

We keep afloat
Just about
With the waves of insecurites
Crashing around our heads
And the undertow of depression
Dragging at our heels

Is it my understanding
That we may never find
A place we deserve
On this slippery slope
Known as mankind?
