The 9th Melancholy

This is the ninth time
I've sat down to write to you
And this is the last time
I'll try to do what I can't do

A letter isn't going to say
Anything that I can't say
And it's never going to get to you
So I won't waste my day

This is the ninth time
I tried my hardest just to cry
And this is the last time
I seek the sorrow from tearless eyes

A teardrop isn't going to give
Anything that I can't give
So for right now it is a thing
I don't need to bother with

This is the ninth time
I tried to write a song for you
And this will be the last time
That I will ever sing for you

A song isn't going to sound
Exactly the way it should sound
And I don't really have the time
To figure everything out

This is the ninth time
I've shaken my fist at the sky
And this is the last time
I'm going to ask you 'why?'

A fist isn't going to soothe me
The way that I need to be
And nobody else is going to try
So I'm going to forget about me

This is the ninth time
I thought about the number nine
It doesn't mean a single thing
It's a word in a written line

So for the ninth time
I'll think of you nine times
And for the last time
I might as well say goodbye.

i love the parallel structure you've used, with one stanza beginning with 'this is the ninth time' and the next stanza explaining why this ninth time is the last. there is so much here in this poem that is raw with emotion and frustration. excellent read--thanks for posting.

kris in your poetry
i am struck and impressed
by the casual realism

like in:

A teardrop isn't going to give
Anything that I can't give
So for right now it is a thing
I don't need to bother with

you make it seem so easy
to shake off the melancholy

And for the last time
I might as well say goodbye.
