The basement of my mind - Rewrite - 11/1/06

On a day that began like any other
the depth of sorrow
in the light of prejudicial pain
is unexpectedly revealed to me

A simple thought
from another sparks a litany
of past regret and failure
to be who I ought to be

Questions flow
out of the barracks of memories
carefully constructed and concealed
in the basement of my mind

There can be no answers
even after all this time
since I am unable to decipher
what it is that locks
me into this parallel universe
in which I reside

No sense can ever be made
of the patches and stitches
in my being crafted
by those over the years who drifted

in and out of a life strangely barren
accidentally lived
in the absence of, and search for
a healing love

that goes on eluding
me like a ghostly whisper
in the dark
before the night
encounters the dawn

It is only the comfort
I seek now to gain
respite
from the despair
of old longings

Well written, and perceptive. these lines speak most to me,

A simple thought
from another sparks a litany
of past regret and failure
to be who I ought to be

Thank you both. It's always gratifying to know that my words resonate with others. I think I am still working on this one though and will eventually post another rewrite per some ideas that Teri emailed to me.

I really like the 2nd and 6th stanzas a great deal. They definitely hit home for me. Great job. Still dig the basement of the mind image too :)
