Life - August 1948 (revised)

Some young Huck Finn,
stares, hand to raggedy
hat, eyes skyward.

The rush to Europe rivals
prewar days, the Queen
Mary jampacked. Walter
Mann and his young wife
stand in Florence
Hercules at their back.

In Ptown a new cult cries
'Activate or Deteriorate.'
Women gesticulate, fall
to their knees. Two men,
traveling salesmen for bronzed
baby shoes greet - a loud-whooping,
open armed collision.
Everybody paints one canvas.

Red rocks music,
a prehistoric sandstone
ampitheater, Stravinsky bows
while the audience shouts.
Imagine a pen not much
longer than your cigarette.

An endless flock of sheep,
great canals water valley,
flax stacked in rows,
lines of raw carrots,
one woman, head covered,
kneeling.

Queen in flood.
Moon waxing. Chanting.
Old crow driving hard.
Ice cream dixies.
Give quick rest to tired eyes.

On the back cover,
two fingered cigarette grip,
toothy smile- William Bendix.
Better tasting, cooler smoking,
eyes hot wired, always,
always, always mild.

you have quite the interesting style. rather than punching the words out line by line, you overlap into the next one. Not bound by syllables. It's quite intriguing. I love your descriptions - vivid, precise, imaginative. You see it all in your head, don't you? but i think you try to say too much. focus on one of the animals instead of the whole parade, you know what i mean? it can mean so much more. it's just a tad confusing, is all. but definitely very interesting. you've got quite the voice.

Wow!!! This is amazing! I love the way you told this story... the structure, the wording, the imagery, the tone. It has a great rhythm and it's so picturesque, "Everybody paints one canvas" connects on so many levels. Every line is perfect!!!

I need to get one bad pun outta the way "You have issues?"
Okay- I've found some 40s Life mags in the walls of our first house and its disorienting and bittersweet to step into those big pages- you got it here with brilliant humor and clarity.
