alone

Written: 10/30/2005

alone I find myself in good company

what could be spared
from them
we have nothing to offer each other
so we all go home
alone

but alone is not forsaken
alone is not without
alone is forever encapsuled
within

within there is a complacancy
within there is acceptance
within there is a home
forever as I am

and who am I to be
who I am
who am I to see
who I am

to be, to see, to feel;
shall I encompass -
doubt
fear
lack
...despondancy

who am I to say
who I am not

I am; who I am - should I be else?

I am not mearly a process - I am not mearly a state ... I am!

I disagree with the comment that this poem describes a self as a state and not a process. I think you've descibed a procession- and it proceeds on shifting "sands"- these states are not fixed but not all front and leading the parade. Thats what comes across here.

The biblical God describes himself as "The great I am." so who am I?

Who am I to say who I am not. This describes me at low esteem, should I feel unworthy & limit myself.

I am who I am ... unless I allow others to label me.

An ontological enquiry that seemed to echo Schopenhauer: 'The root of all existence is pure suffering.' You describe self as a state - something that is fixed by using language to describe it. I think of self in terms of a process that is shifting and in need of constant redefining - lest we lose our sense of self. The question with which you end the poem is telling. How can you avoid being other than what you think you are?

Thanks again for a provocative read.
