Falling Angel

How do you stop an Angel from falling?
You hold out your hand your life and your heart
Yet down she falls swiftly artlessly sprawling
All hopes to save her doomed from the start

With a rustle of her tattered feathers
A hint of red on her porcelain skin
Nothing is left that indicates whether
The Angel you knew still resides within

Hard now to look in her face and her eyes
See all her frailty, how vulnerable she seems
Where in her heart does she think the fault lies?
What is left of her that can be redeemed?

She's earthbound now and can no longer fly
She must walk in the dirt, bear the mark of Cain
Her wings are clipped so even though she tries
All things she desires will be sought in vain

Inside her beauty she's of tempered steel
But she has found it takes something stronger
To walk through a life that now is surreal
She sees the path is darker and longer

Than the streets of heaven she strode before
Can a fallen Angel rise from the dirt?
Can she find within her a way that's sure
To heal her heart and erase all the hurt?

No one can know the state of her heart
No one can reach to the place where she lives
No one can see how she'll play her part
No one but God can know what she gives.

This is the same angel as in the poem "Down, down" - I hope and pray that she has reached the bottom of her particular corner of Hell because that will mean that there is no way left to go but up and out. Any prayers you might send heavenward for this person who is so dear to me would be greatly appreciated.

The techique of using questions in the poem is so effective. The initial question is so inviting. The questions;

Where in her heart does she think the fault lies?
What is left of her that can be redeemed?
touched me.Surely there should always be something to admire in people with fading fortunes. The closing line offered some some consolation; "No one but God can know what she gives."
Nice piece.

Yes, isn't it notable that these people always disappear from our lives?
