Swan Song of Loneliness

There are moments that steal into the cool dark night
Cheek pressed to the pillow lying soft on my bed
Adrift on memories of old as my soul takes flight
While the swan song of loneliness chimes in my head

I remember my once and only love long gone
As a young man so eager to be with me
Amber eyes of a panther, catlike and strong
He was not always kind and I could not see

From the childlike plateau upon which I still dwelt
Cocooned in emotion I did not recognize
There were limits to the love he thought he felt
And I would see love crumble before my eyes

Young and guilt-free our love created new life
Then he walked away I guess I made it easy
Turned his back on my need, cut my heart with a knife
What I once thought was love was just something sleazy

So like many a foolish girl from the ages
I stumbled along towards the fork in the road
Unwitting, unwilling, I passed all the stages
Where a new love might have a chance to take hold

For he killed not just love but all of my trust
And I built a great wall behind which I could hide
I lived as I could and knew only that I must
Keep all that he taught me buried deep down inside

That's why now in the night cool and dark as can be
Old memories go drifting as my soul flies about
And the Swan song of loneliness floats in to me
While the old question of love remains ever in doubt

Darra,
You captured the psychological effects of being played in love quite well. I love the title and use of the swan song to subtly explain the ending of a difficult chapter in life. Another great piece of poetry. The third stanza is my favorite.

Thank you so much, this was kind of a challenge and the metre isn't quite right but the poem said what I wanted it to...

You did very well with the rhyme scheme. I gave up on rhyming a long time ago. It was too challenging, so my hat is off to you on this. I like the Swan Song. Nicely done.
