Coffeehouse Poet

i want to live in the land of java
and overstuffed couches
that are eclectically thrown about the marble floors
of Generic Hip Little Coffee Shop U.S.A.
where the smoke hangs in the air
and the only light
is that which peaks through the tinted windows
that look out on the world of passersby
lost in their little worker bee lives
oblivious to those of us behind the glass
in the land of java
sitting on overstuffed couches
with our pens in hand
and gargantuan mugs on our laps
all java day long

until java night falls
and all the little hipsters,
freakadees and neo-beatniks
come out to play
in the spotlight shining on the java stage
to read, listen and feel
the unspoken understanding
of each other
i dig it, you dig it
we all dig it
in the land of java

the inevitable wave of reality swells up.
i don't even like the taste of coffee.

indeed.

but i sure do love the aroma.

Enjoyed the poem, reminded me of some of my own work, in fact, which doesn't happen all that often. I like the use of the "public area" to convey personal feelings in all poetry as well as yours, and you use that to good effect here. By placing the narrator as a passive voyeur we learn more about them as we do about the snippets of characters that pass by. A tricky and interesting technique that you seem to pull off with ease.

I actually wrote this when I was a senior in high school (think 98) and just discovering my love for writing poetry and wanted to sort of get into the "scene" (anticipating college) but felt not hip enough and intimidated.

And now I just went and ruined it all for you.

well that sure is the city life and something that I'd never want to experience, though I must say that a greater number of people are turning this way which is sometimes a bad feeling that comes in with it when you think about it but I thought your poem was like a mirror image of what it is actually like!
