a little something about governments, war & compromise
bullets, missiles, A-bombs
whiz overhead
you know why you are here
you know
why?
other countries made mistakes
everyone's always right
no mistakes
no compromise
set the others straight
honor
die
to die for your country
a country that's always right
your country that makes no mistakes
kill
to kill for your country
honor
take the life of the man
who kills for his country
kills you for his country
kill him for your country
solve problems
make him die
die for his country
a country that's always right
a country that makes no mistakes
no compromise
you know why you're here
you do?
honor
to kill to die
honor
they said go
so you went
to solve problems
to kill to die
honor
they said go
so you went
to solve problems
to kill to die
with honor
for a flag
a piece of cloth that you wrap
your principles in
a flag that's always right
no mistakes
you pledged your allegiance
you said it
you went
to solve the problems
with life
liberty
and justice
for all.
For none.

awesome. i'm not usually one to actually plug my own work, but after reading this this i think you would really enjoy at least at least two of my pieces. commander and chief, and darkness and silence and unruly violence. anyway, thanks for sharing your work with the rest of us.

Fantastic poem. Love your use of repetition (like the constantly reiterated lies of 'patriotic' propaganda). Great work.

Wisely avoided specifics, I think, giving this poem a timeless quality. The structure is very complex and would porbably work better as a performance piece, the voice of the poet being very strong throughout. I took it more as anti-war poem than a traditional political poem such as those of Langstone Hughes or Neruda, but due to the structure and the alomost groaning passion of the piece it is a powerful one.
I found interesting, also, the lack of sympathy for the soldier in the poem, traditionally the sympathetic figure in this genre. A good twist (and one that I can morally sympathise with to an extent) to a pretty much poetically exhausted subject.

This was really a great piece. I agree with Sian that its nice to see some political work showing up on this sight.

Yes, maybe we'd all be better off if we dropped this 500-year-old idea of 'nation state'. As long as the bombs keep whizzing overhead, we're safe. It's when they fall...
Great to see some political poetry turning up on this site, and quality politicall poetry at that.
Thanks again for sharing.
