Weather- you like it or not

Sounds of the season:
paper crackling as we wrap,
ice cubes clinking in the glass,
rattling gravel under tires.
Isn't this just the Christmas, though,
trails of bare grass instead of snow?

Once I thought I heard sleet
falling, but it was only water boiling in

the pot. The season moves around me,
hails me with its sharpened voice.
Every day the children edge closer,

strung as tight as blinking bulbs.
Energy snaps, nerves rub like cheese. It's
all I can do to keep them from
sliding into tears. Still a few more days, but
only rain predicted. No snow. A barren,
nude, jangling holiday this year.

OOoh...we have so much snow right now, its ridiculous. Your title is awesome. It threw me for a minute, I thought I would have to tell you not to spell it like that, cause its 'whether' then I read the poem. Its awesome. You flow the lines from opposites or cool little interesting phrases to another very nicely.

Thanks for all the comments. This was just kind of a fun thing, but maybe it's worth reworking.
Just curious if anyone noticed this is an acrostic.

No snow thus far here in Michigan either.

"Nerves rub like cheese" - great line. I can just hear the squeaky, annoying rubbery sound.

I like the way you formatted this. Your use of space adds to the effect of your poem.

Everyday the children edge closer (and then you made a line break, how it shows that they are still away from you, then the next stanza, the lines are all bunched together, as if the children are all there, elbowing each other and you're wishing you had more room)

Nice write, Judy. =)

No snow in Maine? We've already had a blizzard. But then even Albuquerque has had snow this year.

"Energy snaps, nerves rub like cheese." I don't quite get the cheese reference. but overall I can relate to thise feeling. It's always tough to be a teacher, and much tougher around the holidays.
