Eat Your Veggies
This year we planted broccoli, hoping it's green heads would add some texture and depth to the garden. The girls had helped, Amanda able to do much more than Kristen, who at two, had more of a sucked thumb than a green one.
The girls delighted in helping, digging their hands down in the rich and smelly mushroom compost. It was a sight to see their little noses crinkle with each pungent whiff.
Nearly two months of daily weeding, watering and South Carolina sunshine, everything was ready for picking. The broccoli heads glistened with a fresh spraying and I felt a smile creep up from Mother Earth, pleased at our bountiful garden.
Washing dishes I called for Kristen. Amanda came into the kitchen to make a sandwich and I asked her sister's whereabouts.
'Outside.'
Grimacing at the thought of my baby running amok in the wilderness I walked out the back door and looked across the garden, expecting to see her playing with the dog near the woods.
Hearing a giggle I looked in the garden, and sitting in nothing but a diaper, Kristen's entire mouth and cheeks were covered in green as she munched away on fresh broccoli 'trees' with only the fervor a child could muster.

I wish you could have felt the terror I felt when she came in with her face all green.
and to the poster, who wondered what kind of mother?
I gess she thought she was slamming you, Manda. I take responsibility for my kids playing outside, not oikled up in front of video games shovelling junk food into their mouths..
I gues she thinks everyone should live a sterile ugly life, ( probably reminiscent of her own, huh)
thanks for writing this Manda,
Love you!! |

| I enjoyed this very much. I have two daughters and more years than I would like to remember ago, we planted gardens. They were into everything and I got to do twice as much work everytime they helped me. Your story sounds more like something that happened than fiction. By that I mean it is truly believible. Good job |
