First Day of School

The sun was bright
And your hair shone like copper
Streaming out behind you
In a river of flame
I called your name
But you didn't hear
Already in a world that existed apart
And I felt my heart
Give a lurch that I didn't expect

The sun was bright and in my eyes
Under those blue, summer skies
As I turned to take one last glance
caught a glimpse of you laughing aloud
already part of a different crowd
and I raised my hand, but you didn't see
you were already looking away from me
and I felt something inside give way
and my heart began to ache

The sun was bright as I drove away
Leaving you to begin the day
That will lead you to who you will become
And I wondered a bit at the tears in my eyes
The pain is a surprise
I thought I'd be ready to let you go
Into this world apart from me
But in my mind all I can see
Is the day they put you in my arms

That was beautiful. I've often wondered if my mother felt that way on my first day of school...Nicely written!
