Dirt Aside

What of the labors of mortal men
When of flesh our Gods descend
What relevance have we here
If not to give substance to our fears

...and when we awaken to such truths
From the stars to the dust we move
What pertinence are we to our peers
If we are afraid to shed our tears

What importance of us mortals
Other than to dig our own portals
To turn and kick the dirt aside
To finally realize, we may never die.

What I like most about this piece is that rather that be direct with the reader with opinion, you pose your truths at questions, forcing the reader to pause and take thought. Sometimes I find the AABB rhyme scheme a bit too playful for such a theme of this gravitas, but you managed to get away with it.

I love "What pertinence are we to our peers
If we are afraid to shed our tears" that is a GREAT line! You said so much here...hell what importance are we if we cant allow ourselves to be ourselves and let people see us for us including our the things that make us most vulnerable. keep on do you mama!!

I liked the implications of your last stanza.... and the metaphor likening a grave to a portal. The afterlife through an earthly portal in the ground. I like it.
