Melt The Snow

Suburban December 1988
supporting actor
leading lady
a pounding in his chest
she's aware
he's aware
but nothing changes
a hand on his back
warm breath on his ear
"I'll kiss you under the mistletoe"
supporting actor catches his breath
she knows what she did
she knows why she did it
she loves him enough to do this
but not enough to make him happy
she gives him all she can
he takes all he can get
It's the best they can do
Suburban basement party
winter, knee deep outside
bowls of chips
plastic cups for drinks
the boyfriend across the room
supporting actor feels so much
leading lady loves but not enough
it's the best they can do
and they do
and the moment passes
It didn't melt the snow
but it helped to ease some pain
"Merry Christmas"
