For Neftali Ricardo Reyes Basoalto *
'one day, rainier than other days,
the railwayman, Jose del Carmen Reyes,
climbed aboard the train of death,
and so far has not come back.'
And when you boarded your train, Pablo,
with a steady step,
and your flag and lamp,
the roots of cedars groaned
it's said, and a great golden fish
nosed at the patient rocks
of Isla Negra.
You left a stillness
full of definite birds;
steered with the backbone of a whale
down the tired river where
willows and a bloodied cross
cast shade, sunlight was shattered
by electric screams.
Your fingers reached out
from great hams of fists
to work on wire, unwind the chains,
unyoke the stubborn oxen
from the plough.
Your flag reflected
in the waters of Jarama;
your swinging lamp the flame
of endless departures.
* NB. Better known as Pablo Neruda

And you do this poem honour, Valerie, and your names will roam all the forests.

"My name was Reyes, Catrileo,
Arellano, Rodriguez, I have forgotten
my true names.
I was born with a surname
of old oaks, of saplings,
of hissing wood.
I was deposited
among rotting leaves:
Pablo Neruda is one of two of my favorite poets. You did great honor to him. Your lines are exquisite. |

| That's made it worth the writing, Joni. Thank you. |

| Wonderful piece! I have heard of the poet you speak of but never had the pleasure of reading any of his poems, I will now after reading your poem. Your admiration for him shines in this piece. I especially loved the 2nd and 3rd stanzas. Great piece! |

| I should add, for further clarity, that the river Jarama was where one of the fiercest battles was fought during the Spanish Civil War. Neruda was working in Spain at the Chilean Embassy during that war and wrote of it in his poetry and other writing. |
