Etude

Falling off the soft sound,
breaking the painted window to let in
the scent of gangrene; to see clearly
the toad writhing in a snake's gorge,

and the carnations
in the buttonholes of bankers.

And you should know
how Jose Cisneros died in the dark hut
to the clicking of rosaries;
lungs choked with broken rock
and no spare coins to close the eyes.

And I could tell you
how Felicidad Consuelo and Maria Benavides
were raped in the cells.
But you should know all this

from the cries of desolate birds,
muteness of dark-leafed trees.

Something like that, Ethgar, though not so much ironic. Rather that very similar emotional responses are evoked by nature, but there are other congruent possibilities, such as the harshness in nature and its indifference, and... That's it really, if we could say it all adequately in the discipline of logical prose, then I doubt that we would write poetry.

The images are vivid and the sounds are haunting... your ending makes me wonder if you are speaking irony at the reader... letting him know how the world conceals the secrets of life in nature. Nice write.

What I have, Cristina, I owe to the example of such poets, and to friends who didn't mince words in their comments, encouraged me but never flattered. I'd no academic training, but I'd the advantage of having lived several lives before I started writing. That can give you an edge, if you're careful how you use it. (And don't fall into the trap of thinking you're good). Bless you.

A study on contrasts. I love the way you counterpoint your ironies...carnations, buttonholes, bankers, Jose Cisneros, Felicidad Consuelo, and Maria Benavides... muy bien! You are so good. I'm sure you are some part of a creative writing board that tears amateurs' poems to pieces with a look. hahaha! Your work reminds me of the great ones in our country--Cirilo Bautista, Ricardo de Ungria. :-D - tina

You pay a great compliment, Kelly - considering the title.
