The Affair

The Affair

Her beauty and I
On a collision course
On a cloudy sidewalk
Going north and south
And though forced
By her beauty, I resist
(to converse, bypassing all words)
talking only with my eyes
(she listens with hers)
telling her soul directly
that our time is to be
short and urgent,
wordless yet real,
beautiful and passing,
fleetingly full of love,
a thousand nights
squeezed into these
few approaching steps
then parting quickly,
leaving a fading memory
of long lingering regret.

I like this one Spor. In particular:

By her beauty, I resist
(to converse, bypassing all words)
talking only with my eyes
(she listens with hers)
telling her soul directly
that our time is to be

Your words and the imagery, flow in this piece like a waltz.

Beautifully written. I read this several times to get full impact of your words. I particularly loved the last two lines, 'leaving a fading memory/of long lingering regret.' Great work!

Thanks 'KissyKissy'--there is an obvious sophomoric sense of reality to this. it is very much a crush on the attributes of a pretty stranger. That is why we can relate. As an adult, it gets a little harder to buy into, except in the mind of a character.

love it, like the fast pacing and the subtle yet effective use of alliteration. Particularly like the conversation with the eyes. "a thousand nights squeezed into these few approaching steps" creates many images.the last half of the poem actually reminded me of a teenage passion, almost raw.

Very good, Eric! You are the first to notice that the 'voice' of the poem isn't really falling in love with the girl--an impossible thing to do in that short slice of time. Really, he is lusting and projecting everything based on her 'beauty'--the only thing that he really can see at this passing moment.
Within that framework, everything is idealized, therefore, makes for good fodder for the fantasy.
Thanks for the words---all of you!
