I'm A Sucker For A Love Song At 12:07AM
Can't this night (rephrase: morning) get any crazier? Right now, I volunteered to work on a closing for a little extra money which means a lot of waiting and the occasional revising of a document here and there or answering phone calls in a pleasant telephone manner. At this juncture, I'm a little loopy and exhausted as I am coming up on hour number 13 of my work day. YIKES! The things I put myself through to earn some extra money to pay for my bougie lifestyle or for the publication of my book.
I am logged on to my iTunes and I managed to download album covers for all 1,772 songs that I have and sync them to my iPod. I've always been told that I have a decent ear for music and that I can recommend music to good friends (i.e. ' Steph loves my girl AKSENT and LIL' ROB!!). As I get up in age, I find myself drawn to slow, sentimental love songs. It's something about a love song that makes me wonder what the artist was thinking when he or she decided to pen their track. What were they going through at the time when they were singing that very love song? You can call me cheesy, if you like . . . at this hour, it wouldn't make a difference.
I came across an album by Craig David called SLICKER THAN YOUR AVERAGE in the R&B section of iTunes. Some weird cosmic force wanted me to listen to this album as my head was filled with skepticism. I perused the titles:
What's Your Flava?
Slicker Than Your Average
Two Steps Back
You Don't Miss Your Water ('Til The Well Runs Dry)
Hidden Agenda
The first three songs were just okay. Nothing didn't really grab my attention until I got to ding, ding ' You Don't Miss Your Water ('Til The Well Runs Dry). As I finished hearing the first 30 seconds of it, I said to myself. "Not bad." Then I started wafting back and forth wondering if I should buy this track in its entirety. I better be careful about this one. I am partially tired and will I regret buying this track the next day once I've had the proper amount of sleep? Oh, f***k it! I'll get it! It's $0.99 cents. I can delete from my library later if I don't like it later.
(****SIDE NOTE: Thank you iTunes for making the single song feature available for purchase, but I get pissed when I have to buy the entire album because you don't make that one song I desperately want available when the rest of the album sucks! The drama. Why iTunes why! Sorry folks, I digress.)
I'm listening to my $0.99 possible mistake and I'm drawn in by the lyrics. It's making me paint all sorts of visuals. I am comparing this experience to drunk dialing an ex. The only difference is that I am out of $0.99 and I have my pride. Okay, I need to get out of here soon and close my iTunes before I do something else strange like buy Player's ' Baby Come Back! Ah . . . Too Late!!!

| Thanks, Greg. Being on the 405 will do that to you as I've traveled that road plenty of times. After working late the other night, ONCE AGAIN, I added Peabo Bryson's (Through The Fire) and Gino Vanelli's (I Just Want To Stop) to my song list. I'm thinkin' a need a vacation. And "Cherish" is a timeless classic, dude! :) |

Wanna know what I bought off of itunes the other day? Cool and the Gang's "Cherish". Why you ask? Stuck in traffic (of course) on the 405 heading to a meeting in Santa Monica - time on my hands, the song comes on, I'm whisked back to the eighties - my older sister rewinding her cassette tape single of it one summer - nostalgic memories of what it felt like to be young began flooding in... I get home later that evening, downloaded the song, listened to it, and when it was over... it just wasn't the same song I heard in the car... I mean it was the same song but... not the same moment I guess. I had buyers remorse.
So i too have been there and done that : ), and for whatever reason stilll continue to do it. I guess I'm a softy for the very things that make me so.
Nice read man. |

| I agree. Let's do that. We just might be able to come up with a killer music collection that we can market for overworked and underpaid writers. :) |
