The Hardest Thing

Leaving, once again.
Before the dawn,
damp grass awaits the sun.

Swollen, sorrowful eyes.
Tears glisten on cheeks
lit by remorseless street lamps.

Urgent embraces
reluctantly released.
"I have to go."

"I love you."
"Be careful."
"I promise."

Boots and uniforms
order into lines and
turn away.

We have to go.

This really weighs on me. Definately can feel the emotions here, it's as though I'm standing there a part of it. Great writing, well done.

This was a great read and spoke strongly of the emotions invloved in having to leave and fight for your country. Emotionally well written work here :-)

I like how you describe the scenery before you get into the specific detail about a soldier leaving for war. I like how the shortness parallels the the situation.

Well done. I like the shortness of the poem, it's suites the content. The only thing I am not sure of is the title. The poem says so much with so little, but the title is not as powerful. Anyways, really enjoyed the read.

Scary stuff. I know the feelings all-too-well. My step-dad was sent to both the Falklands conflict and the first Gulf war with the Royal Navy.
It's just as terrifying for families as it is for the serviceman being sent away.
Strong poem.
