motherly advice

Her mother told her once: "Don't be no whore, Fe-fe."

Felicia thought about this often. She could almost see her mother now, arm hanging drunkenly over bathtub edge, cigarette—stuck to her bottom lip—moving antennae-like and her mascara-streaked, lipstick-smeared face.

Felicia knew even then, at eight years old, to listen; mothers know these things.

I love the first line. "Fe-Fe" - what an awesome nickname. It sums up for me the entire mother-daughter relationship between the two characters. There's so much in just that first line!

hey jan--thanks for the read and for the suggestion. i think you and jim may be right about 'from experience' needing to be dropped. i suppose my point was that i wanted it to be more than just her telling her what she should and should not do. i suppose the discription of her may give the impression that she knows from experience. smile. thanks for the feedback!

I agree with jim the "...from experience" is not needed. Other than that good, strong story. I liked it.
