Almost Famous

I almost interviewed Maya Angelou

back in '96,

and almost married two millionaires

between 2000 and '03

I've seen celebrities

close enough to reach,

And chatted up a rock star, unknowingly,

so stoned I couldn't see

I dined with an African ambassador

who hated my tattoo

and my family history

has a colonizer or two

In almost 30 years,

I've been so close to fame,

but never once,

close enough

that you would know my name

Nicely done. I met Jesse Jackson. I could have, and didn't, meet G G Allin. Dr. Joyce Brothers told me to turn off my tape recorder during a lecture. And I kept former Reagan press secretary James Brady from the rest room at the Connecticut State House. I was "busy" in there, and former government wonks be damned, I'll finish. Even if he is in a wheelchair and attended by a nurse 24/7 after the attempt on Ronnie's life.

Wow. This sounds bad in retrospect.

He was good humored about it. When he saw the magazine under my arm, Brady said, with a grin, "So...in the library, eh?"

I offered him my mag. He politely declined...

A gentleman.
