hit

burning desert heat
lost in the firefight
the third this week
spattered bits of brick
heavy sniper fire

sweat drops like blood
falling on my rifle
sizzling into salt
shouted commands
not understood

sudden silence
coolness amid the heat
faces scream without sound
blood bright in the sand
medics in a frenzy

mama calls from afar
supper's on the table
cowboys and indians
deadly fire from astride
a Huffy steed

sweet metal smile
saturday night long awaited
mingled scents of
perfume, beer, sweat
I'll love you forever

breathtaking beauty
in a white veil
crystal blue eyes
dripping joy'
till death do us part

trembling cry
from new lungs
cutting one bond
forming another
I would die for him

I realize now
my shirt is torn
wet and sticky from
an unknown soldier's blood
my God'¦it's me

sweet memories
melt into horror
the pain arrives
not from the wound'
but from the loss

and death us do part.
