A Conversation on the Masturbation of Religion
"The problem is, it's not so much the religion as it is the (wo)man who executes the religion. I mean, as a person who was raised Catholic, I can say much of it is fucked up but what is fucked up about it are the religious instructors and priests and overtly and extremely religious followers who completely and utterly destroyed anything that could be considered beautiful about it because they focused on the aspect of fear and because of that, I'm afraid of churches...Yes, it irritates me when Dick goes on his 'I hate religion' rants. Mainly because, while he is right to have his beliefs, he is quite ignorant about religion as a whole. He identifies religion with organized religion and can't seem to seperate the two from each other. But I digress...
...If [atheists] had any real concept of religion, they'd realize even atheism is a religion. Religion is defined as 'a specific fundamental set of beliefs and practices generally agreed upon by a number of persons or sects' and 'something one believes in and follows devotedly; a point or matter of ethics or conscience.' If you go by those two definitions, atheism falls under religion because atheists follow science religiously, regarding it as undeniable fact, just like Christians and Buddhists and all those others regard their religion as undeniable fact. And another thing, since atheists regard science so highly, they tend to forget that science is based on theories not FACTS and that there is no definite [or obsolute] proof that science and 'proven' theories are correct. They are just the best answers that can be given. And believing in a theory is like believing in a god - we have no proof it's real, only little experiences that help us come to our own conclusion and by golly, do we hope it's true...
...My old therapist was an atheist and that is when I realized all this (back in like 2000). He was a hardcore atheist and had flyers about atheist organizations that preach atheism. How can atheists say they aren't a religion when they are organized and preach their beliefs? Not that I am saying that all religions are organized (all preach their beliefs though), however organization and preaching are two common characteristics in a religion...
...If it walks like a duck and talks like a duck...
...And [and] chaos can be organized. It's the beauty of life. Everything follows a circle. A circular path, everything runs into itself...
...Chaos runs into organization, organization runs into chaos...but isn't everything? It's the existential idea, ideal, but there are no definities, no specifics, nothing solid. Everything is nothing and nothing is everything. Where you find order, you find chaos. Where you find love, you find hate. Where you find peace, you'll find madness. It's a balance. Life is a balance."
