LIFETIME UN-POET
the un-poet, that's me
with no artsy proclivity
that is, until
you came
crashing into me
with your song
breaking me
the way you were broken
making me see
there was no use in hopin'
a siren song? or a vision
for a better me...
your words
made it clear
what it had to be
there, there...
dam the flood
let's keep it moving.
life is for those
who choose it
i get it now...
loud and clear
the message of a lifetime
meant to inspire courage
and not a life fettered by fear
2-22-2002
*This corny, cheesy little poem is a tribute to the artist Maxwell in gratitude for his song, Lifetime. I wrote it just after experiencing a series of life altering circumstances that redefined my world back in 2002.
Although many things were changing for me at the time, this song was the one constant in my life. It seems like everywhere I turned there it was - in my ear. At each turning point or at every milestone, there it was, again.
Those who know me in the real world know and understand the impact this song has had on me and on my life. I probably should have made greater effort to issue words of more epic proportions in gratitude; but I was tired and it was what it was. I wrote exactly what I was thinking at the time and after all, isn't that what writing is really all about anyway - expression?

| Interesting write. It's all about self-expression! Thanks for sharing. |

| Thunderpen, thank you for your comment on Lifetime Un-poet. This piece is really what it is...for lack of a better word, let's just call it "drivel" -- hence the "Un-Poet" portion of the title. But I am attempting to be very honest with my writing - the good and the bad - which is why I posted it here. Although I consider it a bit corny, sharing it somehow made me feel normal. Does that make sense? |

OriginaRisky1 says it well.
It's personal.
Have you, as an exercise, looked for the same condition/moment in others, or reflected in the environment? In other words, to win new images, take this outside of you (while keeping it as close), and see it on the stage of the Earth. |

| Tucker, thank you for your assessment of Lifetime Un-Poet. In fact you are being quite kind (corny and cheesy is how I described it in the associated narrative). You are right, it is loaded with sentimentalism and leaves no doubt in the reader's mind about how that song affected me. Thank you for your feedback! |

I always feel a little weird commenting on personal poetry, it is like critiqueing another parents child. That being said I give you mad props for the opening stanza. The rest flows well but it is personal and therefore loaded with sentimentalisms which is quite ok in a personal sort of free form exercise.
