Teardrops from Lake Evergreen

From writer: this is an extract from a play i've been working on for a while (wich was actually inspired from a dream i had). the title should suggest the tone of the play, but here is a lighter scene from the coming-of-age/pursuing a dream story. Tell me what you think.

Scene 3
[The SPARKS' home, at the dining table, MR. SPARKS and MRS. SPARKS is sitting, MITCHELL eats his meal slowly.]
MR. SPARKS: So how was work today?
MITCHELL: It was great.
MRS. SPARKS: And how were the wood-cutters and the fisherman's wives?
MITCHELL: They were fine.
MR. SPARKS: [pats his son on the shoulder.] You know son, one of these days you'll grow to be a real good man! You'll make this old fool proud!
[Father and son share a smile]
MRS. SPARKS: Well, 'tis his fourteenth birthday in a week's time. It's best to prepare for another coming year.
MITCHELL: Well actually, Ma, Pa'¦I want to be a sailor.
MR.SPARKS: But you already are a sailor aren't you?
MITCHELL: No, I mean a real sailor. Like, travel the oceans. Explore the world.
MRS SPARKS: The ocean! Mitchell, what is the matter with you?
MITCHELL: Ma '
MRS. SPARKS: You must be ill, he must be ill; I'll call the town doctor!
MITCHELL: No Ma, truthfully'¦
MR. SPARKS: Mitchell, are you sure?
MRS. SPARKS: He's ill for sure,
MITCHELL: No! I've thought about this. I've listened; it's what my heart said for me to do. I want to be a sailor.
MRS. SPARKS: He must be ill! [Walks away.]
MITCHELL: Pa?
MR.SPARKS: But, are you certain? This is home, where you were born.
MITCHELL: I know it is. It'll always be home. But there's a whole world out there to see. I want to see it. It's what my heart told me.
MR. SPARKS: You want to do this?
MITCHELL: Yes.
MR. SPARKS: Really?
MITCHELL: Yes, Pa.
[MR. SPARKS moves to his wife's side.]
MRS. SPARKS: Husband, that child is not leaving the village!
MR. SPARKS: Oh come now, this is the boy's dreams! This is what will make him happy! He's our son, but he's a grown boy now. It's the heart that's leading him, could you stop that?
MRS. SPARKS: He's different'¦
MR. SPARKS: He's our child.
MRS. SPARKS: He's special. [They both walk up to MITCHELL who sat at the table, anxiously.] Son,
MR. SPARKS: Son.
MRS. SPARKS: We decided, that we're going to allow you to go to the city.
MR.SPARKS: We want you to work hard, stay true.
MRS. SPARKS: And do whatever will make you happy.
MR. SPARKS: But never forget us.
MITCHELL: I won't Pa. And I will Ma ' I'm going to the city, I'm going to go to Bigg City, and make you proud! I'll come back here one day and tell you everything! I'm going to become a grown-up! Just like you Pa.
[MR. and MRS. SPARKS are in tears. They bid their son good luck.]
[Calls out:] I'm going to become a sailor!
[MITCHELL grabs his hat and coat, MRS. SPARKS takes out a back-pack and hands it to her son. He takes it graciously and exits the house.]

Scene 4
[It is the next week, morning and the townsfolk pour in from all sides.]
WOMAN 1: Did you hear? The Spark's son is leaving the village!
[The crowds are aghast.]
MITCHELL: [running around, greeting each person respective.] Goodbye, ma'ams. I'm leaving to the city. Mrs Berry, did you hear? I am going to be a sailor!
Goodbye good-sir's. I am leaving to Bigg City! Mr. Berry, farewell, sir!
Butcher Long, I am going to the city, and I'm going to sail across the world!
Goodbye everybody!
Good bye Mr. Whiskers.
MR. WHISKERS: Se ya kid'¦ and Good's speed!
MITCHELL: Bye everyone, I'm going! I'm going! [Quiet down, serious now, he hooks up at his parents.] Ma, Pa! [He moves C. to BOB.] Captain on deck. [Salutes. BOB salutes back, and softly smiles.]
BOB: You take care now.
[MITCHELL nods.]
MITCHELL: Farewell everyone! I'm leaving to Bigg City!
[Lights down.]

Hey, i just want to say thanks for commenting on my work (i don't get too many :'( ). As much as i'd like to post the rest of the story, it's way too long, and i still feel the story's not yet ready to be seen by human eyes. I'll fix the typo asap, and I googled "The Alchemist" - and I've put it on my 'list of books to read.'
So anyway, just to say thank you to you both, your comments were very helpful.Pce.

Made me think of "The Alchemist," only sailor, not shepherd. I sort of felt like it could be a bit of a prequel. I liked it. I thought you painted a cute little town with these cute towns folk. I could see them all dressed up in quintessential "once upon a time" town people clothing and whatnot. I can't wait to see how the rest of it plays out. And I would love to know what happened in the first 2 scenes to lead to Mitchell deciding that it was his heart's dream to become a sailor

typo? MR. SPARKS and MRS. SPARKS is (are?)sitting

I'm so terribly curious now as to what your entire dream was about?

Do we get to find out what happens to Mitchell in the big city?

I love coming o age stories...and 'following your dreams' stories are always heartfelt and charming. but for all the good there should be some bad...balance ya know?

This was hard for me to fully enjoy only because it's such a small snippet, and I can't stand the word/slang 'ma' and 'pa' but I'll get over it..to be able to finish the story.
thanks darlin for a glimpse of your dream
