Gap
I look in the mirror.
I look in the malls and at society.
I see it everywhere-
and wonder,
can it ever be narrowed?
People say that I have a nice smile
and all I see is that annoying
space in between
In some photos it disappears
Those are my good shots.
When it comes to beauty,
maybe I chastise myself too much.
Even the ageless Lauren Hutton has that slit
and can still get shots in glamour mags
It works for her'
So, what's the deal?
I know that I am beautiful,
especially inside - but
(there's always a 'but')
that chasm in my mouth- it just bugs me!
a damn fly could go through it!
Even the garrulous late night chatterbug Letterman
has an open window
between his two front teeth
As if he needed to vent more!
He could put a pipe in it!
Madonna actually had it made in her mouth!
What's the deal with that?
But people love it,want to emulate it-
It's cool and trendy
but I have never been one for fads-
which explains why I don't shop in
that apparel store
with the big 3-letter name.
You know, the one with those
pretentiously hip TV and billboard ads.
All the big malls have that shop
even if the garments
are on the drab side.
Still, people of all walks of life
flock to it like pigeons -
What's the deal?
People of all ages races and faces
wearing the same 3-letter logo on t-shirts,
coming together
in the spirit of material bliss.
But this is frivolous'
What we all should display
is unity beyond the clothes
and underneath the skin,
so that we may be able to close
the various gaps we have.
Between us there is disparity,
a void of misunderstanding
of which we avoid to acknowledge.
A stubborn cavity
that we must bridge.
